The Mazor X Stealth Edition is a robotic guidance system that combines robotic technology, navigation, instrumentation, and advanced software. Robotic guidance helps to deliver high-quality care, maximizes procedure predictability and patient benefit, supports the surgeon in the accuracy of the surgical procedures. The Mazor X Stealth Edition provides pre-operative and intraoperative guidance. It is specified for the correct positioning of surgical instruments or spinal implants during general spinal and brain surgery. The intra-operative guidance is combined with synchronized navigation which helps to lower the risk of complications and prevent the possibility of revision surgeries. The 3D effects help to make an ideal pre-operative plan for the procedure for each patient.

The device was co-developed by Medtronic in Dublin, Ireland, and Mazor Robotics. Mazor X Stealth Edition was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in November 2018. It is expected to spread in key regions later in 2019, changing the quality of spine care.

In 1961 Unimation Inc developed the first industrial robot handled molten die-castings and removed the human element from these dangerous tasks. In 1988, with the introduction of robotic arms approached the ability to use them as surgical assistants. On January 24, 2019, Virginia spine institute surgeons were the first ones to perform spine surgery using the Mazor X Stealth Edition. Surgical team consisted of the lead surgeon Dr. Christopher Good, Dr. Colin Haines, and Physician Assistant Ian Brown. The procedure was performed on a 23-year-old patient who suffered from progressive scoliosis at the Reston Hospital Center. Surgeons from around the world come to learn about the latest in robotic-assisted spine surgery capabilities in the Reston Hospital Center. It is one of the only eight Visiting Clinician Programs (VCP) in the United States. A study presented by Dr. Good, showed that the use of radiation in the operating room was decreased by 76% as a result of robotic guidance system. It is an obvious benefit for both the surgical team and patients.

Back pain is the most common cause of work-related disability. It causes 264 million work day lost yearly. 80 percent of adults experience it at some point in their lifetime. The Mazor X Stealth Edition is a revolutionary technology for hundreds of people. However, robotic systems have been used clinically for a short time. It’s still soon to confirm 100 percent effectivity of these products, and theoretical benefits can be determined only by time and experience.
